Former Detroit janitor and famous bluesman John Lee Hooker was born today in Coahoma County, Mississippi.
Here he is with “Decoration Day”, from It Serves You Right to Suffer. The album was a one-off for Impulse Records, with a backing trio of Milt Hinton, Panama Francis and Barry Galbraith. Hooker showed up to the recording session with a jug of whiskey and a plank of plywood for his feet, and made sure that the lights were dimmed.
